The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Originally The North-West Mounted Police, this force was modelled on the Royal Irish Constabulary and came into being on 30 August, 1873. Under the direction of the newly appointed first Commissioner, Roscommon born George Arthur French, a force of 275 officers and men began their famous 'March West' on July 8, 1874.
